Biography

The Cure are one of the defining bands of the 1980s — a group whose career arcs the entire decade, from the cold post-punk of Seventeen Seconds (1980) to the melancholy grandeur of Disintegration (1989). Robert Smith's voice, songwriting and increasingly iconic image gave goth rock a mainstream face without sacrificing its emotional weight.

The early-1980s trilogy of Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography established the band's gothic atmosphere. By 1983, with the release of singles like 'The Walk' and 'The Lovecats', they began experimenting with brighter, almost playful pop.

The Head on the Door (1985) broke the band into the global Top 10. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987) was a sprawling double album of pop, rock and gothic experiments. Disintegration (1989) — built around 'Pictures of You', 'Lovesong' and 'Pictures of You' — is widely regarded as their masterpiece.

The Cure's influence runs through alternative rock, dream pop, shoegaze and modern indie. Their balance of melodic accessibility and emotional darkness remains unmatched.
