Biography

Formed by Joy Division's surviving members in late 1980, New Order spent the decade reinventing what a guitar band could be. Their fusion of post-punk songwriting with sequencers, drum machines and dance-music structures was unprecedented.

Movement (1981) is haunted by Joy Division's shadow. By 1982's 'Temptation' single they had found their own voice.

1983's 'Blue Monday' became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. Power, Corruption & Lies (1983) and Low-Life (1985) are both classics. Substance (1987) collected the singles into a global blockbuster.

New Order's influence on dance music, indie and pop production is enormous. Their Hacienda nightclub helped birth the rave era.
