Biography
Madonna was, and remains, the defining pop star of the 1980s. From her self-titled 1983 debut through Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and Like a Prayer (1989), she shaped both the sound and the visual culture of the decade.
Her 1982 single 'Everybody' broke in New York clubs. The 1983 debut album turned her into a national star, and 'Holiday' became her first global hit.
Like a Virgin (1984) sold over 21 million copies. True Blue (1986) was the world's best-selling album that year. Like a Prayer (1989) saw her at her most ambitious, blending pop, gospel and controversy.
Every major female pop star since — from Britney Spears to Beyoncé to Lady Gaga — has cited Madonna as a model for ambition, reinvention and control.
